Our very first: a collaborative project/a review with a voice/a release with some heart

A binomial of pancanadian ubiquity framed on the Guelph-Salluit polar vector, Qallunaat/Odemin feels the scope of passing time and attests of the humility of the voyageur/guest. An incremental project (its third flap part is already in the works) in which intimate fires are woven of quiet plains and mountains, of troubled waters and storms, warm like a midnight sun: hope is gray like that, tacking between arable rock and carved folk with a propensity for the tragic. Kudos to the Out Of Sound Rezonance Program, an initiative from the OoS label which allows young Inuits to take part in different steps of the DIY gestalt of an album (here, the silk-screening of the cover art, and some back vocals). Of quiet plains and mountains, of troubled waters and storms, Qallunaat/Odemin is an abundant oxymoron as vast as the Canadian Shield.

Perdu Hamilton came out of the steel city like a demented iron worker duplicating tapes from the top of a skeleton skyscraper. covered in soot, they released (with twisted zines and art in tow) some of the crappiest fidelations to ever saturate a cassette. Be warned, long live Perdu. longer still is WTCHS….

Telephone Explosion is releasing some hideous stuff. Not to be confused with Pleasance records but surely to be confused with putting out some of the best Canadian Obscurica ….. Here we must input album of the year: CROSSS - Obsidian Spectre.  a bit hokey pokey but condescendingly deep. ALBUM OF THE YEAR

East coast psych subsidiary PONCHO RECORDS gave us Walrus (the band). we gave them a coo coo cachoo?

Grickle Grass must come first. A show in a Children's Museum that this year saw the rise of A K U A, Odonis Odonis and another WTCHS shout-out. Rich Aucoin delivered in his unique way as well.

Best in Show occurred late in the year. Dec 27th @ the laughable Blackshire Pub…. no sense putting in 15k worth of gear if your sound guy isn't gonna man the fucking board. Not to worry, Construction/Destruction didn't need 15000 dollars , or a sound guy. They were the best. simply/truthfully….

Wild Domestic played a house show in St. John's Newfoundland that nearly brought me to tears.. then they changed their name and confused the minions. thanks be to the masses. Serf Kanata is good, is they/them/we/time/travel/life/band/spirit/intent/growth/vision

Im gonna say that the Sadies continue on their path of weed smoke and paisley dress code to the top. Their set at home county music and arts festival 40th anniversary edition went late by 20 minutes and nobody cared. tops.

Wild Domestic return home; change name

After four integral and shaping years, the boys of Wild Domestic have decided that it is time to move in a new direction. The band is not breaking up, but instead they continue with a renewed focus, under a new name. Prior to returning home from their latest tour of Eastern Canada, the band invited several close friends and associates to their home to share the news with an intimate, celebratory homecoming set. Towards the end of their set, bassist Zon Hoffmundy announced that after several years of incredible support and growth, the band had decided to change their name – SERF KANATA.

From the band:

 As a touring instrumental band in Canada, we feel we have a very tiny voice within a necessary and far greater conversation that needs to take place. SERF KANATA is a natural progression to our current dichotomy and people need to know where we stand. We do everything ourselves and the industry is a vortex. We are in business, alive and well, contently struggling... cogs in the perpetual colonial wheel. We don't always know what to say or how to say it, but hopefully this new name will help guide us in our passions, education and outlook. It may isolate us like our late nights on the road but then again, perhaps SERF KANATA will help us say more. At least it will be our choice. We have grown so much and are excited about the future but we are also indebted to the people that have supported us as Wild Domestic. Our family, friends and fans are the most important thing to us, we will drive anywhere to play for you. For those that have our records and wear our t-shirts, we thank you. Wear them as a badge, play the songs loud! You knew us first.....

WILD DOMESTIC - ISLAND EAST TOUR

After a successful run of shows this summer, the boys in WD (Wild Domestic) are anxious and happy to announce that they will be back on the bus and out on the open road for the third time this year. The five piece, two drummer, semi-instrumental, post rock-ish band will be doing it in fine form....

The tour will commence October 17th @ CBTG's in St. John's, Newfoundland where they will be hosting a three night residency. This tour also see's a Moncton residency for October 26-28th where they will play host at Plan B. Showgoers will get a chance to grab a limited edition, full-coloured copy of their debut album.

*They will also be releasing an incredibly limited tape, but the only way you can hear it is to go to one of their shows. Go see them live and maybe grab a copy!

more psych, more prints, more signings

Out of Sound Records is starting to get the idea that it's a new age psychedelic, art rock record label. Not just your average and mundane garage rock filler version, but TRUE-Psyche. The kind of songs that harken back to the past and move it ever so slowly forward. Ignoring era's like the late seventies and eighties and catapulting psychedelia right back into the future where it belongs. The never ending circle that it is.....

Walrus is one such band. Brother's Justin and Jordan Murphy lead a rag-tag team of flower boys from Halifax. Comprised of six members channeling their inner psychedelia, songs range from trance to surf and end in 1967 at the corner of Haight and Ashbury; except these guys live just over the Macdonald Bridge in Halifax, Nova Scotia. A reincarnation of 60's psyche-pop if there ever was one, their music will adhere to all levels of inebriation or consciousness. Walrus takes you swiftly into a summer's daydream you’ll find yourself never wanting to wake up from. Conga's, simple keys, heavy r&b bass walks, 12 string guitars and falsetto's all find a home in Walrus, with Out of Sound Records.

On their Out of Sound Debut, all the animals come to play with Walrus and all their merry side-projects: Gnarwalz, Shadowfolk and Sheepman. Co-released with Poncho records, the Halifax psyche-cult start-up this 7” spinning at 33.3 rpm explores the new psychedelic sounds of eastern Canada, longtime home of reverb, down-tuning and boy-girl vocals.

NXNE ; an out of Sound takeover

Wild Domestic reinvent themselves/Hit Road

The recently pared down Wild Domestic reinvent themselves/hit road.

Shrinking from seven to five members over a period of two years that saw this two-drummer band release their debut mixed alongside their favourite engineer bud Tim Glasgow (Metric/Sonic Youth) at Giant Studios in Toronto:

Both Drummers are still there, and on their recent 7" split (with Hamilton torch carriers WTCHS, London noise/punk duo I SMELL BLOOD, and Guelph's BLEET), Wild Domestic return to the root of their riff-driven exploratories with the frenetic surf in "old water sports". Tapering the shoe-gaze and post-rock instrumentals that made them popular, Wild Domestic hit the road to prep a new record with a batch of songs that are going to melt your #%$@ing face.

The Grickle Grass Festival goes down Saturday May 25th.   This year's line-up is compiled from a great knowledge of the national music underground, and bands on the cusp.  It marks a new benchmark for the musical curation.  Take a bow, Out of Sound's Adam Sturgeon, Savannah Sewell and the mojo working Grickle Grass team.  Here's a Hot Dog preview of the invading acts scheduled to appear.   

EACH OTHER

In dreams as Heaven approaches we hear the call of soaring voices - like angels.  The sailing guitars clink celebatory sips while the drums manically keep the ship moving forth in those deep rumbling waves.  And then we stop, and look to one another with smiles on our faces and recognize that we've got Each Other.  Here.  May 25th at the Children's Museum.

This band is ready to challenge for the crown.  These word of mouth bands, and this one in particular, are the ones to see.  These guys don't get flogged around in your face supporting MP3 players or Burgers, you just hear about them because your friend was there when they ripped it up last time around.  This is nothing new, before we had Each Other they were Long Long Long, a group discussed every bit as much as Mac Demarco before Pitchfork and the World took notice.  The World will undoubtedly take notice of Each Other, but before then come see them up close at the Children's Museum.  Further Listening.

ODONIS ODONIS

Listening to Odonis Odonis is like running through an impressive collection of LPs.  You got the Jesus and Mary Chain's 'Psychocandy', a Phil Spector compilation, a Ventures collection, all the Pixies albums, Ministry 'Land of Rape and Honey', 'The Mind is a Terrible Thing To Taste', and 'Psalm 69' to name but a few.  And your guide along the way is a tasteful sifter the likes of the late great John Peel (we'll call him vocalist/leader Dean Tzenos).  A lot of bands have great collections though.  Odonis takes inspiration and forges onward with a live show that backs up what they roll out from the studio.  Their late 2011 album 'Hollandaze' not only registered them a buzz worthy album, but united three of Toronto's leading independent labels - namely Buzz, Daps and Pleasence Records.  As 2012 drew to a close and a new year was birthed Odonis took their act on the road, playing NYC alongside exploders METZ and the hottest band in Toronto (and the country) the Soupcans.  Their ascension has been all deserved word of mouth talk talk, and even more action.  To those in the know on the OO there will be no surprises on May 25th at Grickle Grass.  Just the expected overjoy and loss of time and space in the World of Odonis Odonis.  Further Listening.

WTCHS  

In the never-ending search of new music, and the modern age technology that gives us instant access to anything and everything, Wtchs are a true anomaly.  Because of the overload we tend to yay or nay acts faster than we can truly process the music.  Wtchs find their way back to you.  This isn't the kind of thing on record that necessarily punches you square in love.  It takes some patience.  Catching these cats live, at an early gig at Sweet Magic, I wasn't sure what to make of this.  I thought maybe the Garage was too clean.  Try two, learned me further fruits of their labour in the way of 'wait, is this a Garage Punk band or a sludge metal band?' The question isn't so much important to their genre allegiance, as to note: the pieces of this puzzle fall together only with open ears.  Try three, I was ready to be blown away, and was.  Try four, was the killer. You'd assume practice makes perfect, and bands to get better each time out.  This isn't always the case.  Too often bands lose creative steam, and the energy, as their chops precede the original intention.  Wtchs, I can honestly say just get better and better and better.  Take it slow, be prepared to be entranced and drowned in 'the sound'.

'The sound'?  Pop accessibility at the core, some early Misfits and Cure poke around in the feedback.  And then the buzz kicks in, and Jag and Junk swap spells to remove the roof.  Dave 'the Ace of Bass' is steady, never showy, he's the welcoming committee.  And Tori! Tori! on the skins for the win!  This may just be their year.  Note: Wtchs are one of the coolest bands in our provincial radius, not only because their music rules, but they're some of the nicest people you'll hopefully meet in the Grass.  Further Listening.

LEGATO VIPERS

Legato Vipers bridge the gap, or surf through, between the underground and the mainstream.  It's hard to imagine any crowd, no matter what age or level of musical exposure not rocking out to this quintessential Canadian unit.  The Vipers, named by the legendary Don Pyle (also the Producer of their debut), carry the torch of their accomplished producer and his legendary Canadian band Shadowy Men From A Shadowy Planet (see the music of the Kids in the Hall).  They gaze the '60s and the Big Surf Sound, but this is no cover band, they rock o-riginals.  They've also become noted for their unique live situations - no stranger to hockey rinks, and sometimes accompanied by a burlesque show.  They're also some of the hardest working musicians in the province, with members playing key roles in other acts such as Bry Webb's band.  They'll challenge for best performance of the night, but more importantly they'll be dug by all who see them.  Further Listening.

RICH AUCOIN

Rich Aucoin is a leader.  He is the leader of the Good Times Brigade.  He's not content to set up his gear and offer music for anything but a great time.  He's not satisfied until everyone in the room is raging with a smile.  Rich started his mission from the East Coast and beautiful Halifax, and his name spread like wildfire as he visited every stop from here to there accomplishing what he clearly set out to do.  You'll hear great things about Rich concerning his music, and you'll hear great things about Rich concerning his person.  In times of turmoil and uncertainty you can rely on Rich to bring a break and reminder of what we set out to accomplish when the schedule is clear and the night is young.  Further Listening. 

AKUA


Grickle Grass organizer Adam Sturgeon calls this 'everything Top 40 should be'.  AKUA is unmistakably Pop music.  A kind of pop music that begins in the Soul with the intention of reaching others right where it hit the performer.  There's beats to move the body submerged in haze with a voice bellowing up underneath and into the central control of excitement.  An air of familiarity within the music allows for easy accessibility.  The belief is on Saturday May 25th you'll be shake-shake-shaking to the music and entranced by the toast of this lovely voice.  Further Listening.

GREY KINGDOM

Crafted from great attention to the tradition of Roots music in each of its forms, Grey Kingdom delivers songs of the land and times.  Spencer Burton aka Grey Kingdom voices a listen up session for those that still think a song can make change or raise awareness.  Not in some kind of staunch political way, but rather let's spit and take a couple notes and form our own ideas.  I'm not sure if it's Spencer's big beard or sense of calm thought and delivery, but this is like the wise heads-up stories your Grandfather might pass along.  Listen up and learn something.  Or switch off and glide in the atmospheric ride - like the outside world doesn't matter past your wheels on the open road and the ol' tape deck.  We're lucky to have a true worker, with a belt raised high from the accomplishments stacking up underneath, living here in the Forest City.  Ask him what's what.  Take some notes.  Spencer's got something worthwhile to pass along.   Further Listening.

Our favourite noise-punk/instrumental duo I SMELL BLOOD, will be heading out with Out of Sound Alum SAY DOMINO in support of a new split release. Recorded by Denholm Whale (ODONIS ODONIS, CARTOONS)to 4-track, Eastern Canadian cities and towns will be getting a serious dose of why London ON is finally on the "Canadian Music Map".

Say Domino are fresh off playing Weird Canada's first-ever London showcase on Record Store Day 2013, and recording new tracks for a TBD release later in the year. Featured on NXNE's '2012 Top 60 Tip Sheet' and have spent the last few months plotting a new release and playing shows with Soupcans, Hussy, Das Rad, Phèdre & The Growlers etc...
I Smell Blood had a great 2012, celebrating a split-cassette release w/ CROSSS through Hamilton DIY label PERDU, and a split 7" release through Out of Sound Records w/ Wild Domestic, WTCHS & Bleet. ISB is a full-frontal assault on your oratory senses. They've had a busy 12 months, opening for the likes of Japanther, Child Bite, Tera Melos & METZ . This is the band's first full-tour, and first time foraying out into the euphoric bliss that is Eastern Canada.

If you wanna know where the Grickle Grass grows you better shake your legs, you better wiggle your toes!

On May 25, 2013 we present the 4th Annual Grickle Grass Festival. There is no other festival of its’ kind in Canada. Held in the historic London Children’s Museum, this unique event offers family programming during the day, with the help of Growing Chefs! Ontario. The daytime programming places emphasis on community - sustainability, making healthy choices, and of course, fun! As the sun sets and the kids go home, the Grickle Grass Festival offers adult patrons the exclusive chance to party in the rooms and corridors of their cherished childhood memories as the Children's Museum is transformed into a fully licensed night of music.

New Paths and Fond Farewells

I write this knowing full well I won't be able to be there to experience a few last magical moments and performances. Nor, to share another story out on the Picnic table or that beloved "outdoor" couch we simply didn't have room for inside.

I'm talking about saying goodbye to the Craven Cottage. It's been a cultural hub for much of what Out of Sound has done in London and served as a home away from home for so so many of us. Nestled behind the Children's Museum down by the River, it was a place where I sought refuge but also was able to reach out and share in the experience of the arts. On February 28th, we say goodbye, and I won't be there to enjoy it. What a better fit to say a fond farewell than the recently pared down post-rock outfit WILD DOMESTIC...

While we will all continue to remember such an incredible space we can recognize that this is a cultural phenomena that is all too important to music scenes all across Canada, North America and pretty much anywhere good people need an outlet to push the boundaires of their community further towards, ahem, enlightenment?

Well, I don't know about all that... but house shows are damn fun and we've had so many:

Raleigh, Evening Hymns, Shotgun Jimmie and Baby Eagle (this was my first jaunt down the street to my future home), Say Domino, WHOOP-Szo, Sam Allen and a flurry of other locals, Bulletproof Tiger, Esther Grey and our communal fav's COUSINS!!!!!! The palce that served inspiration to Lonnie in the Garden, where silkscreening, recording sessions and video shoots were the norm.

I'll do my best not to well up, cause all you need to know is we have two final events:

This is just great and it will surely be missed.... somebody step up and keep it going! What is likely the best kept secret neighbourhood in the city, filled with inquisitive passersby, friendly neighbours, missing cats and the beautiful rumble of a not too distance train; this is my way of saying goodbye, reaching out and asking you all to do the same. With holiday consumptions well on their merry way we wanted to make a couple of announcements and top it off with a little "Xmas Cheer".

2013 is gonna start with a bang, many are still not even sure if they believe it will arrive but in the likely event that it does, we're gonna do it up right! On January 10th at the lovely VAN GOGH's EAR in Guelph, Gain Music will present the release of the latest in the Out of Sound PIE-Series; limited edition, hand-printed, split 7"ers. This time featuring your favourite double drumming band WILD DOMESTIC, Hamilton based, internationally acclaimed basement kids WTCHS, fucking power-duo 
I SMELL BLOOD and Guelph's answer to combat the folkies (we still love you guys) BLEET. This event will be followed by a release in London and Hamilton respectively.

Introducing: Out of Sound Outreach Initiatives

Hey all you Indie Bears!

As the winter season falls upon you, we here at Out of Sound Records have been busy. I guess it's the time of year to get all smusheee and sentimental, to think of others and stuff....you know, to make the world a better place!?! So, while the rest of indie Canada nestles in for the winter months, we're way up north, and we're all over making good on our purpose of being awesome and keeping it real. No hibernation this time. 

So without further adieu, we'd like to introduce one of the many initiatives we're encouraging ALL of our artists, friends and foes to take part in: 

The Out of Sound Rezonance Program

MISSION STATEMENT

“In art, the hand can never execute anything higher than the heart can imagine.”

The Out of Sound Rezonance Program is an initiative to raise what all the hearts of aboriginal youth can imagine possible. We aim to provide hands-on professional development for artistically and business oriented youth. Through paid internships, guided by a knowledgeable professional, Out of Sound Rezonance hires and trains youth in culturally appropriate ways to develop their creative abilities and entrepreneurial skills through community outreach programs, while also focusing on the development of their capacity to work independently, organize, become leaders, improve self-esteem, and foster the love of art.

CURRENT PROJECTS

Salluit Screens – Salluit Screens is a paid internship program run in Salluit, Qc., an Ungava Bay Inuit community of 1300 inhabitants that is accessible only by plane. Four teenage Sallumiut were picked for the program. They work and train several days a week in their own print shop which is currently set up in a small out-building of Ikusik Public High School. They are learning how to silkscreen everything from T-shirts to album covers to posters. In addition, the program focuses on improving entrepreneurial skills, teamwork, leadership, and pride. The youth often strive to include their own art in their projects whenever possible.

Currently, Salluit Screens (aka Elbow Prints; Ikusik means elbow in Inuktitut) works in partnership with Brighter Futures and the Nunavik Regional Board of Health and Social Services, who pay a large portion of the salaries of our trainees and trainer. (Brighter Futures grant 2012)

In addition, New Paths funded the purchase of the silkscreen machinery and initial supplies.

Our first project was to create a logo and print T-Shirts for the Blueprint For Life -  Social Work Through Hip-Hop event held at the Ikusik High School for elementary age students. Not only did our apprentices create the logo and print the shirts themselves but they will also be serving as mentors for the younger kids throughout the week long workshop December 10-14, 2012.

Afterschool / Community workshops - Out of Sound Records will be presenting a series of bi-weekly workshops throughout the months of February to April 2013. Again, these projects will take place in Salluit, Qc. These workshops aim to gather youth interested in recording music and guiding them through the process of writing, recording, producing, and distributing musical works. Though much of the workshops will focus simply on making music and having fun, there will also be sessions dedicated to skills such as networking, promotion, and artistic collaboration. The main goals of this project will be to foster creativity in the youth of the community, as well as ensuring that those seriously interested in pursuing musical careers are given the wisdom and support needed to successfully follow this path.

These workshops are presented in partnership with the Ontario Arts Council, who funded a residency for Adam Sturgeon/WHOOP-Szo to come to this community to make and support music. (OAC Ontario-Quebec Residencies Grant 2012)
